How To Build An Outdoor Living Space

In Grand Designs August 2016 featured an article titled, ‘Build an outdoor kitchen’, but how do you actually do this with the UK weather? Outdoor kitchen or dining areas are ideal in the summer months when all you want to do is sit outside and enjoy the sun with your friends and family.

In the UK, the summer goes by very quickly and we don’t get to enjoy the hot weather for too long. The constant bad weather can put people off creating their own outdoor kitchen or dining room area. However, an Umbris louvre roof can allow these spaces to be used all year round.

Four steps are given in the Grand Designs article on how to create your outdoor kitchen. These steps are: position it right, decide on space and features, choose a style and weigh up the cost. These four steps can also be used when thinking about installing an Umbris louvre roof. Positioning the louvre roof in the right place is very important as you need to make sure you are sheltering and shading your preferred area. There are five different options on where you want your Umbris louvre roof to be placed, it can be building integrated, free-standing, post supported, floating or fixed.

Building integrated louvre roofs are perfect if your patio area is placed right outside your back doors whereas floating louvre roofs are more ideal for courtyard gardens where the outdoor area is surrounded by wall structure. To create a completely separate outdoor kitchen a free standing Umbris roof can be used away from the home structure.

Umbris can provide many features including Umbris HeatStrips, audio speakers, LED lights, weather sensors and additional weather protection. Umbris HeatStrips and LED lights allow you to use your outdoor living space in colder weather and at any time of the day. Audio speakers are the perfect addition as you are able to connect your music through Bluetooth or a docking station, ideal for summer parties. Weather sensors are a clever piece of technology, allowing the Umbris louvre roof to close itself when rain is present. This stops any water getting onto your outdoor living area if you accidentally keep the louvres open throughout the day helping to keep any furniture dry.

Additional weather protection includes being able to integrate glass elements, external curtains or vertical louvres. Vertical louvres are available in a variety of materials to provide extra weather protection or privacy to your outdoor living area. Curtains or blinds can also be added to provide a wind break and to solar shade your area even further.
